This is the third of four volumes originally published in 1877 (two volumes) and continues the history of the Indian Navy at a time when the European powers were obtaining a decided technological advantage over the powers of Asia, and the acquisition of empire became their primary motivation. Like the first two volumes, this volume contains numerous first-hand accounts of the Indian Navys operations -- this time in Aden, China, New Zealand, Somalia, Sind, Punjab, and Burma. There are also dramatic first-hand accounts of shipwrecks highlighting the hazardous life of seamen in those days, the result not only of unpredictable storms, but disease (the most deadly hazard), hostile tribes, and the increasingly parsimonious East India Companys poorly maintained ships. There is also much information provided concerning the administration and maladministration of the Indian Navy. The fourth and final volume of Charles Lows History of the Indian Navy will chronicle the history of the Indian Navy from 1854 to its ultimate disbandment in 1863.
